“كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا الِاسْتِخَارَةَ فِي الأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا كَمَا يُعَلِّمُنَا السُّورَةَ مِنَ القُرْآنِ”
Translation: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to teach us to perform Istikhara in all matters just as he would teach us a surah from the Quran.”

Allah says in the Quran:
“وَعَسَى أَن تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَعَسَىٰ أَن تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَّكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ”
Translation: “But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِالأَمْرِ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الفَرِيضَةِ، ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ”
Translation: “If anyone of you thinks of doing any important thing, he should offer a two-rak’ah prayer other than the obligatory prayers and say: ‘O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge'”

How to Perform Istikhara
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to Perform Istikhara correctly:
1-Make a Sincere Intention
Before beginning the prayer, make a clear intention in your heart regarding the matter for which you are seeking guidance. Whether it’s about a job, marriage, or any other decision, have that specific issue in mind.
2-Pray Two Rak’ahs of Voluntary Prayer
After forming your intention, pray two rak’ahs of voluntary (nafl) prayer. In the first rak’ah, after Surah Al-Fatiha, you can recite Surah Al-Ikhlas or any other short surah. In the second rak’ah, recite another short surah.
3-Recite the Istikhara Dua
After completing the prayer, remain seated and recite the following dua:
Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدُرُ وَلاَ أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ. اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ. وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي.
Translation:
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. For You are capable, while I am not, and You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen.
O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention your specific matter here] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs – in the present and the future – then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it.
But if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs – in the present and the future – then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”
4-Mention the Specific Matter
When you recite “this matter” (هَذَا الأَمْرَ) in the dua, think about the decision you’re asking guidance for, such as a job offer, a business opportunity, or a marriage proposal.
5-Trust in Allah’s Guidance
After completing the dua, place your trust in Allah. Whatever happens next, whether the path seems easy or difficult, trust that Allah is guiding you toward what is best for you, even if it’s not what you initially expected.
