The Story of Umm Habibah

Umm Habibah was born Ramlah, daughter of Abu Sufyan, a respected leader among the Quraysh. Raised in Makkah, she grew up in a family that was deeply opposed to Islam. However, Ramlah’s heart inclined toward the message of monotheism, and she accepted Islam at a young age, embracing its values despite the challenges that lay ahead.

Her early acceptance of Islam led to her and her husband, Ubaidullah ibn Jahsh, joining the first group of Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) to escape persecution in Makkah.

Once settled in Abyssinia, Umm Habibah faced yet another test of faith. Her husband converted to Christianity, abandoning her and their shared belief. Though alone in a foreign land, Umm Habibah’s faith in Allah (SWT) never faltered, and she remained devoted to Islam. This steadfastness reflects the Quranic principle of patience in adversity:

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
“So, indeed with hardship comes ease.”
(Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:6)
