The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of this phrase , Hadiths about Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un illustrating its significance during times of hardship and loss.

Hadith of Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها)Umm Salamah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“ما من مسلم تصيبه مصيبة فيقول ما أمره الله: إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون، اللهم أجرني في مصيبتي واخلف لي خيراً منها، إلا أخلف الله له خيراً منها”

Translation: “Whenever a Muslim is afflicted with a calamity and says what Allah has commanded him to say, Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’oon , Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha (Indeed, to Allah we belong, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better),’ Allah will surely compensate him with something better”
(Sahih Muslim)

Practice of the Prophet ﷺ During Calamities

“إِنَّ العَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ وَالقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلَا نَقُولُ إِلَّا مَا يُرْضِي رَبَّنَا، وَإِنَّا بِفِرَاقِكَ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَمَحْزُونُونَ”
Translation: “The eyes shed tears and the heart is grieved, but we will not say except what pleases our Lord. Indeed, O Ibrahim, we are grieved by your departure”
(Sahih Bukhari)

This shows that grief is natural, but one should always remain within the boundaries of what pleases Allah.

General Guidance for Calamities: The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“لَا يُصِيبُ الْمُؤْمِنَ مِنْ نَصَبٍ وَلَا وَصَبٍ وَلَا هَمٍّ وَلَا حُزْنٍ وَلَا أَذًى وَلَا غَمٍّ حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةُ يُشَاكُهَا إِلَّا كَفَّرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ”

Translation: “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that”
(Sahih Bukhari)

This Hadith teaches that every hardship a believer endures serves as a means of purification, erasing sins and elevating their status in the sight of Allah.
