بِسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ.

Transliteration: “Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi, wa bika arfa’uhu. Fa’in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ‘ibadakas-saliheen.”

Translation: “In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side and by You, I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it, and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.” (Al-Bukhari 11:126)

Arabic:
بِسْـمِكَ اللّهُـمَّ أَمـوتُ وَأَحْـيا

Transliteration: “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya.”

Translation: “O Allah, with Your name I die and I live.” (Al-Muslim 4:2083)

 Seeking Forgiveness

 

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught us to seek forgiveness from Allah before sleep:

Arabic:
اللهم قني عذابك يوم تبعث عبادك

Transliteration: “Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawma tab’athu ‘ibadak.”

Translation: “O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day when You resurrect Your servants.” (Abu Dawud 5045)

For good dreams and avoidance of nightmares

 

To seek protection from nightmares and invoke good dreams, the Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended the following dua:

Arabic:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ

Transliteration: “Qul a’udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqabihi, wa min sharri ‘ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdurun.”

Translation: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the madness and appearance of devils.”

(Surah Al-Falaq 113:1-5)

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

When one of you goes to his bed, let him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto it after he left it. Then let him say:

‘Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uhu wa in amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tuhfaz bihi ‘ibadika al-saalihin’

(In Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name I rise. If You should take my soul then have mercy on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves).”

(Al-Bukhari 6320, Muslim 2714)

 

Reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah every night, they will suffice him.”

(Al-Bukhari 5009, Muslim 808)

The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are:

Arabic:


آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِ ۚ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ (٢٨٥) لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۚ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ (٢٨٦)

Translation: “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers… (285) Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity… (286)

Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas

 

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each before going to bed.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ (١) ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ (٢) لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ (٣) وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ (٤)


Translation: “Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One, (1) Allah—the Sustainer ˹needed by all (2)He has never had offspring, nor was He born(3)And there is none comparable to Him(4)

[Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4]

Surah Al-Falaq:
Arabic:

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ (١) مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ (٢) وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ (٣) وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ (٤) وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ (٥)


Translation: “Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak (1) From the evil of that which He created (2)and from the evil of the night when it grows dark(3)and from the evil of those ˹witches casting spells by˺ blowing onto knots (4)and from the evil of an envier when they envy (5)

[Surah Al-Falaq 113:1-5]

Surah An-Nas:


Arabic:

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ (١) مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ (٢) إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ (٣) مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ (٤) ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ (٥) مِنَ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ(6)

Translation:

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind(1)the Master of humankind(2)the God of humankind(3)from the evil of the lurking whisperer(4)who whispers into the hearts of humankind(5)from among jinn and humankind(6)
